INTRODUCING CHARLIE O'FLYNN

17/9/2012

Friends of ours, Anisa and Kieron O'Flynn, called in to visit last friday with their 3 week old son Charlie. I do think all newborn babies are cute but little Charlie O'Flynn is so adorable he just makes my heart melt - just look at those photos below, too perfect.

He was such a star throughout our session, so chilled and happy to go with the flow, with full credit due to his proud dad who was a magician when it came to settling him for our sleepy baby shots.  If only it was that easy in the wee small hours of the night....

Below are a few of my favourites from our session. I'm looking forward to watching Charlie grow over the next few years... he'll be a lady killer, I'm certain of that.

Enjoy your photos Anisa & Kieron. xx

JUJU & AHMED MATERNITY SHOOT

I had the pleasure of welcoming Juju and her husband Ahmed in my studio over the weekend.  Such a fun loving couple who are very excited about the arrival of their little princess - their first baby.  Not long to wait now with less than 4 weeks to go, but it is almost a shame that it has to end - some people suit pregnancy and Juju is definitely one of them. She looks great.

Below is a preview of some of the photos from our session. Congratulations Juju & Ahmed, and best of luck for the arrival of your little princess.

SHEBA BEAUTY LOUNGE

My latest assignment took me to the Sheba Beauty Lounge in Silicon Oasis. If you haven't checked it out yet, then I'd highly recommend a visit - http://www.sblspa.com.  They offer the full spectrum of beauty services - spa treatments, massages, manicures & pedicures, hair cuts/colour/treatments, but it is the concept and decor that really make SBL a stand out for me.

The rooms and treatments are based on five natural themes (earth, wood, water, metal and fire).  The result is simply stunning and so very inviting.  Below you'll see a sample of the treatment rooms, chill out lounge, as well as the hair salon and nail spa. They're a friendly bunch there too, so like me, I'm sure you'll feel right at home.

NEW PRODUCT LINE - Queensberry Press Albums & Photo books

I am pleased to announce the addition of Queensberry Press Albums and Photobooks to my product line.

I have sampled many albums and photo books since establishment, and as far as I am concerned Queensberry Press are the gold standard.   Queensberry Press Albums are impeccably crafted, premium products.  Leather bound, embossed covers, translucent title pages, overlay or pagemounted images, and finished with protective corners. Simply beautiful.

What I love most about Queensberry is the Album Design Software Photojunction - it allows complete creative freedom in terms of album or book design. Plus it is fully integrated with Workspace, for quick and easy internet album proofing - meaning you can view your album, make comments, changes, or give your approval to print, from anywhere in the world.  It couldn't be easier!

Below is a taste of the Queensberry Wedding Album product. If you'd like to see a printed sample, then I have one in my studio that I'd love to share with you.

Images below are curiosity of Queensberry Press.

STEP BACK IN TIME - VIVIAN MAIER

This is such a beautiful story.

"Vivian Maier’s street photography was recently “discovered” just a few days after she died at the age of 83. The Chicago nanny took over 100,000 photographs and many say she may rank among the top street photographers of the 20th century". http://fstoppers.com/street-photographer-discovered-a-few-days-after-her-death

Below are a few of my favourite photos from her New York collection, era 1950s www.vivianmaier.com.  It's such a treat to be able to step back in time and view NY street life through her eyes. Beautiful work. Some of it quite quirky too, which I love - she obviously had a sense of humour.

Vivian, you are a legend. Such a shame you aren't here to enjoy the recognition.

OUR OWN FAMILY PHOTOS

Summer in Dubai. Yes it is awfully hot and humid, but it is also beautifully quiet, with most families having retreated to their home counties. They'll be back early September - in the meantime it feels as if I have the place to myself. No traffic jams, no parking issues. No queues in the supermarket, no crowds at kids playcentres, malls are comparatively empty. The chaos has left and everything becomes a little easier to navigate. Is it wrong to love summer in the uae?

My weekends are usually planned around shoots I have booked, but for the next few months I plan to take full advantage of the quiet summer days by taking a few weekends off, just to be a mum & a family - and that feels great. In keeping with that theme I thought it was the perfect time to share some of our own family photos that were taken recently by friend & photographer Sarah Clemence. You can view more of her work at http://www.sarahc.me.

We just love the photos Sarah, thanks so much. xx

SAQR FAMILY - My first Emirati Family

5/7/2012

I have photographed families from many different countries since I begun working as a photographer in Dubai - families from Tanzania, Iran, Bahrain, America, Norway, Ireland, England, Australia, Syria, Lebanon, Russia, India, expat and those who have grown up here, but funnily enough, never an Emirati family, until last weekend. And it was an absolute pleasure. Two adorable little girls, one 8 months, the other 4 years. And two older brothers, but just as cute at 5 & 7 years.

We had a crazy, fun, session at their home - the girls dressed in white Dior, the boys in Kandora. We shot on a white background studio style to start with and changed to a black background half way through. I have so many adorable shots, which for cultural reasons cannot be shared. Such a shame for me, but I respect their traditions. Below is as much of a glimpse as I can give - you'll have to use your imagination for the rest.

TOM, NEASA & CORMAC - Family Portrait Session

24/6/2012

I had the pleasure of photographing baby Cormac and his parents Tom & Neasa on Friday.

Cormac, at almost 8 months old, is one happy little man.  He was in front of the camera for a little over an hour without a single grizzle in protest.  In fact, I think he would have been happy to keep shooting all afternoon!

It's fair to say we all had a good time and it really shows in the photos. In fact there are so many gorgeous photos of this family I had a tough time short-listing a few for my blog (my first shortlist was 30 long!  not very short at all).  Anyway, I got there in the end.  Below is just a small sample from our session.  Enjoy.

It's taken me a while to get my head around it, but here I am... kick starting my photography blog with my very first post. Monumental.

I have so many photos and stories of fun shoots to share but first up I just have to share this video - the most creative, beautiful proposal I have ever seen. It gave me goose bumps!! And truth be told I think I welled up a little too!!  Lucky girl. Hats off to you Isaac, you raised the bar. Enjoy the clip!

I am Katrina Matthews, the artist behind the images on this site and the author of this blog.

After a recent move back to NZ & Auckland, I am busy re-establishing my business in the Karaka/Drury area.

I specialise in families of all ages and stages.  I just love the outdoors at sunset for both maternity and family portraits. The light is flattering, the skies beautiful and I find families tend to come alive at this time, resulting in natural, playful images. Not to mention the endless setting options, from client's own farms or lifestyle properties, to parks and public beaches. Uniquely your own.

Since our move back to Auckland I have been making the most of the  outdoors and the summer weather, focusing on my families and maternity offerings, but I'm equally excited about opening my home studio as autumn approaches, so I can start to welcome newborns and under 1s back.

If you would like further information on my portrait sessions, simply get in touch via the contact form on this site, or email me directly at info@katrinamatthews.com
